Wavesword moves the Mage into close-range frost combat. The useful distinction is between attacks that build toward Freeze and the follow-up that becomes available after Freeze is inflicted. The official profile describes Frost Shard after Freeze at no SP cost; that does not mean the whole setup is free.
Build the opening, then recognize it
| Skill | Role described by the class introduction |
|---|---|
| Tidal Rush | Sends piercing energy blades forward, staggering and increasing Freeze buildup |
| Thundersnow | Creates a nearby area storm that builds Freeze |
| Glacial Burst | An ice burst at the target location; Ice Crystal eruption can catch nearby enemies |
| Frost Shard | A forward strike after inflicting Freeze, with no SP cost for that follow-up |
| Tidal Rend | Three forward strikes; enough stacks extend it into three additional area attacks |
For the conditional Tidal Rend extension, watch the current skill's required stack indicator rather than assuming the extra attacks occur on every use. The official introduction does not give the needed stack threshold in that description.
Why the defense wording matters
The profile says many Wavesword skills reduce incoming damage or grant stagger immunity. Damage reduction and immunity to being staggered are not the same as taking no damage. Look at the effect attached to the particular action you are using; do not extend one skill's protection to every movement or every attack.
A practical learning order is to identify a Freeze-building action, recognize when Freeze actually applies, and then attempt the unlocked follow-up. Once that is reliable, decide whether you need more nearby area coverage or better reach. This is a learning plan, not a proven maximum-damage sequence.
Account for two different updates
The October 29 letter says Wavesword attack power and growth scaling were rebalanced. The November 7 maintenance separately corrected the duration of the Ice Crystal skill effect. Neither notice supplies a full new numerical build sheet.
An old clip can therefore mislead in two ways: its damage may reflect the earlier scaling, and its Ice Crystal timing may reflect the earlier effect problem. Check current tooltips and visible effects rather than presenting either old behavior as permanent.
Choose melee deliberately
Elemental Staff and Wavesword belong to the same Mage but solve different positioning problems. Wavesword's defensive properties support attacking in close; they do not make a ranged Staff allocation automatically the right trait path for it. Inspect the separate weapon tree before spending points.
