Choose a class for both of its weapons, rather than for an assumed tier ranking. ArcheAge Chronicles starts Early Access with Warrior, Ranger, Mage and Berserker, each offering a pair of weapon styles. A Ranger is not restricted to firing a bow, and a Mage is not restricted to fighting at range.
Compare the four classes
| Class | Current weapon pair | What you are choosing between |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Longsword / Greatsword | Timed parries and HP-draining attacks, or a heavier Resolve-driven approach |
| Ranger | Hatchet / Longbow | Mobile close combat and counters, or marked-target ranged pressure |
| Mage | Elemental Staff / Wavesword | Charged and retained fire/lightning spells, or close-range frost attacks |
| Berserker | Axe and Shield / Warhammer | Shield-backed advances and pulling enemies close, or stored-power hammer attacks |
For a practical first choice, ask which defensive action you want to learn and where you prefer to stand. A player interested in sword parries has a different reason to choose Warrior from someone interested in Greatsword guarding. Likewise, a ranged preference is a reason to inspect Longbow or Elemental Staff, not proof that either is the strongest class.
Ranger or Warrior: which combat habit fits you?
Choose Ranger if you want to compare mobile close-range attacks with a bow option in the same class. Hatchet's Stormsplitter combines evasion and attacks, while Wind Blade starts with a deflection before its ranged slice. Longbow instead asks you to manage distance and marked targets. Choosing Ranger does not require staying at bow range for every encounter.
Choose Warrior if you want to learn sword-based defensive responses. Longsword's parry rewards timing at impact; Greatsword's Brace and Resolve instead provide a different setup for a stronger follow-up. Those are different decisions within the same class, so “I want defense” alone does not identify the weapon you should learn first.
Before committing, pick a situation you want to handle: an incoming strike, an enemy outside reach, or an opening after defending. Compare the relevant action in the current skill description. The class profiles explain those tools; they do not establish a guaranteed easiest class or a measured damage ranking. For the full action descriptions, continue to Ranger Hatchet, Ranger Longbow, Warrior Longsword or Warrior Greatsword.
Weapons and traits define the build
Each weapon type has a separate trait tree. Spending points in one is not the same as unlocking the other weapon's tree. Nodes can add stats, unlock skills or alter existing attacks; the official progression guide even gives offensive and defensive examples for the same Greatsword.
Look at the actions you actually want to use before allocating points. Pick a connected path toward those actions, then check how the resulting attacks feel. This is a planning method, not a tested optimal allocation. Character stat points and weapon Trait Points are separate systems.
Are classes gender-locked?
You cannot freely choose either gender for every class at the current Early Access launch. The October 29 producer letter says gender selection will be added one class at a time. The first announced addition is a female Warrior, planned for the December update. Removing every class's gender lock by full release is the team's stated goal, not an option already available today.
If a particular gender/class combination matters to you, check the character-creation selection before committing. Do not create a different class on the assumption that an announced appearance option also promises a later class transfer. The letter does not establish such a transfer system.
Which weapons are coming later?
The same letter plans a third weapon for each class over successive updates, beginning with Gladius for Warrior. Keep that separate from the currently available pair. A preview image or a database entry does not mean a future weapon can already be equipped.
The October 15 progression post uses “Fighter” in its sword-tree example; the class introductions and later producer letter call that class Warrior. It is not evidence of a fifth launch class.
