Elemental Staff has two distinct stages: prepare a charged spell, then reuse retained magic without another incantation. The Mage class introduction describes Retain as the mechanism that connects preparation to repeated attacks. Energy Core then rewards casting retained spells; it is not simply another name for ordinary charging.
Separate charge, Retain and Energy Core
- Charge: prepare fire or lightning magic. Elemental Overload accelerates charging when its conditions are met.
- Retain: the official profile describes retaining cast spells so they can be used again without the incantation.
- Energy Core: casting retained spells grants stacks, with more powerful spells granting more. The profile specifies 10 stacks for Shooting Star.
If you are trying to reach Shooting Star, check whether your actions actually involve retained casts rather than assuming every initial spell contributes in the same way. Follow the current skill indicators and tooltips; the class profile is not a full input diagram.
Fire and lightning have different setup tools
| Skill | Function in the official profile |
|---|---|
| Wall of Fire | A fully charged fire release that damages an area, staggers and builds Burn |
| Flamethrower | Broad fire pressure that builds Burn; retained magic supports another fire attack |
| Lightning Storm | Repeated area strikes that build Shock |
| Lightning Pillar | Rapid lightning attacks with increased damage against Shock-affected targets |
| Shooting Star | A major area attack after the described Energy Core buildup |
For a lightning-focused sequence, the distinction between building Shock and benefiting from Shock is useful. For fire, look at the target's position relative to the area you will affect before committing to the preparation. These are decisions suggested by the skill descriptions, not a measured rotation.
Why an old boss-melting clip may mislead
The October 29 launch letter reduced Wall of Fire damage and strengthened boss resistance to max-HP-scaling skills. It also says Elemental Staff lightning skills were tuned. No complete replacement values are provided there, so a pre-launch demonstration is not a current damage guarantee.
Make room for the preparation
Charged magic asks you to plan where and when you begin casting. If an enemy repeatedly reaches you during preparation, shorten the exchange or create distance before attempting it again. Retain is useful because it changes the preparation burden for subsequent casts; it should not be read as permanent invulnerability or permission to ignore incoming attacks.
